What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Non Penetrative Sexual Activity?

default
Posted on Sat, 20 Aug 2016
Question: Recently on a business trip, I went to a massage parlor and got a full body massage. Post the massage, the lady (of unknown HIV status) gave me a handjob and also performed oral sex (while using a condom).

During this time, I also briefly kissed her vagina and performed oral sex on her superficially for 15-20 sex. What are my chances of acquiring HIV? I understand from these forums that Oral Sex has lower but non zero risk of HIV Transmission. Is that an academic thought or have there been reported cases of oral sex leading to HIV transmission.

The incident happened 5 days back and I would like to get a confirmation of my current status. What are the recommended tests which may help me get a confirmation of my hiv status at the earliest?

Specifically, is the PCR RNA test done post 10 days a sufficient test? OR should I now be taking a series of tests to rule out the possibility of HIV.

Appreciate your response

Brief Answer:
chances of acquiring HIV is very minimal

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I have read your query and understand your concerns. I am sorry for my delayed response.

There have been reported cases of oral sex leading to HIV transmission. The approximate rate or chances of HIV transmission through oral route is less than 0.014 percent. This is documented in medical literature.

Since the HIV status of the lady is unknown, and you did perform unprotected oral sex with her, the chances of you acquiring HIV cannot be completely eliminated.

The earliest HIV test that you can get done is HIV RNA PCR test that can be done at 14 days after a suspected exposure. Along with this, you can also do a HIV ELISA fourth generation test at 12 weeks post exposure to doubly confirm your HIV status. If both the tests are negative then your HIV status can be taken as negative for granted.

Please do let me know if you have any doubts or clarifications needed from my end.

Wish you good health.

Regards,

Hi Dr XXXXXXX

Many thanks for your response. I am currently planning to take the PCR RNA test appx 15-16 days post exposure (10 days from now). How conclusive is the result of PCR RNA test?

Can I only get 100% confirmation on being non infected by HIV 3 months down the line once I undertake the ELISA test. I would really want to have a deterministic test which can rule out the possibility of HIV but within a month if possible. Is there any such option?

Brief Answer:
99.1% conclusive

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for writing back, XXXXXXX

The HIV PCR RNA test will be 99.1% conclusive at 14 days post exposure.

The second test to be done at 3 months is just for confirmation, and to rule out HIV by almost 100%. If the second test is negative, you can stop worrying about HIV and move on in life. This is for your reassurance.

The PCR test is the most deterministic test available for HIV as of now.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Hi Doctor

One final question - The stat provided earlier of "The approximate rate or chances of HIV transmission through oral route is less than 0.014 percent" - is this when the other partner is known to be HIV positive or a blended rate when the partner's status is unknown?
