Question: 55 year old female. Had a Hysterectomy four years ago. Took uterus and cervix. Have had on and off Brown watery discharge with some pink on paper for about seven months or so. Had vaginal cuff checked. Trans ultrasound and cultures done. All fine. More frequent UTIs and painful reddish areas in vaginsl area. I have been told By two doctors that I have signs of vaginal atrophy. Can atrophy cause these symptoms?

Brief Answer:
Such symptoms are seen in vaginal atrophy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Vaginal atrophy is commonly seen after total hysterectomy. It causes dryness of vagina and inflammation, pain and burning during urination, frequent urinary tract infections and a mild spotting vaginally.
Since all the other pathologies have been ruled out vaginal atrophy seems to be the most likely cause of your symptoms.

i can see red areas that are sore and will get a small spot of blood from wiping, but my concern was the light watery brown discharge that I occasionally see. Is that from inside atrophy?

Brief Answer:
Yes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The light watery brown discharge can be from the vaginal vault that has undergone atrophic changes and even from higher up. It is not a worrisome symptom. Local application of moisturizing gel or estrogen cream can help.
Hope my answer is helpful.
