Suggest Treatment For Umbilical Hernia

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Jun 2016
Question: I have a tender lump in my belly button. On ultrasound they said it was a lipoma or a fat containing hernia. Sometimes I can push it back in a little but it hurts when I do. Would they typically be tender to touch or more pronounced when bloated? Should it be investigated further?

Forgot to mention it said it was a 14x14x9 mm mass. Is this size anything significant?

Brief Answer:
It is an Umbilical hernia. Might require surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
You have an Umbilical or a Paraumbilical hernia.
What would be important here is the size of the defect.
In either case, you should see a Surgeon and get it operated. Its a minor surgery wherein they will put the contents back in the abdomen and repair the defect and they will close it. It would be better to get it treated so that no complications develop.
The hernia would be mildly tender to touch. When you are straining it will become more pronounced and would bulge out and therefore can get more tender. Also, the contents in the hernial sac will increase on straining bringing more tissue in it and therefore leading to more pain.
It is nothing to be worried about but getting it treated would be better.
Take care and feel free to ask any queries on the subject.
