Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition of colon.The disease has a relapsing-remitting course, which means that there are periods with symptoms like abdominal cramps ,bloody diarrhea etc followed by periods without symptoms.
Because the cause of this condition seems to be a malfunction of the immune system ,there is no definitive cure for it.The aim of the treatment is to improve the signs and symptoms and obtain a long-term remission (period without symptoms).
There are a number of treatments available and the drug used depends on how severe the condition is and how often your symptoms flare up.
The only possible cure for ulcerative colitis could be surgery ,which removes a part or the entire colon.This is indicated only in severe cases of the condition ,when the other options of treatment have failed to keep the condition under control.
