Suggest Treatment For Ulcerative Colitis In An Elderly Person

Question: I am a 54 year old Caucasion male. I am in good health, 180 1bs, 6'2'' and exercise at least 3 days a week. I had ulcerative colitis in my 30's and early 40's. It went into remission. Over the holiday, when traveling, I had mucus in my stool and subsequently some blood in the mucus, albeit, not a lot. I had my last colonoscopy last February. Should I be worried? Can UC come back full throttle after being in remission for years and what causes it? Finally, should I call my GI specialist next week?

Brief Answer:
Yes to both

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am Dr Mittal. I have read your message. I think I can help you .

First , yes ulcerative colitis can make a comeback.
However, in view of your travel possible infection has to be ruled out.
I suggest wait a few days. It may settle if it's a subclinical infection.

Test a stool routine and get the appointment.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information contained in this message will be able to help you find the best solution for your problem. Best of luck. Dr Mittal
