Suggest Treatment For Torn Medial Meniscus

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Nov 2015
Question: I was diagnosed with a torn medial meniscus in my right knee five years ago and it has flailed up recently so I began wearing an over the counter knee brace which feels really tight and made my knee ache behind the knee in the bend of the knee. After wearing it all day today my right ankle was swollen. I raised my leg and now the swelling has gone down to almost normal however the leg is aches slightly. I am concerned that it might be a blood clot. I routinely take an 81mg enteric aspirin and one Aleve each morning. Should I take a more aspirin now?

Brief Answer:
Hinged knee brace. Pain killers. Arthroscopic surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

The swelling in the ankles could be due to tight application of the knee brace which can occlude circulation of the fluids and cause it's accumulation. Limb elevation above the level of the heart will resolve it.

The medial meniscus tear will prevent you from completely flexing the knee without some amount of pain. Also it can cause locking of the knee.

I advise you to apply hot water bottle to the painful region. Avoid flexing the knee, squatting, climbing stairs or kneeling. Take pain killers like Tablet Ibuprofen 400mg twice a day for 5 days after meals. Take Tablet Pantoprazole 40mg once in the morning, half an hour before breakfast. Knee brace is immigrant but try wearing a hinged knee brace which will allow some movement.

It would be wise to get it evaluated by a Sports Medicine specialist and treated Arthroscopically or key hole surgery, otherwise arthritis can set in.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Thank you for your reply. So you do not feel I should be concerned about having a blood clot?

Brief Answer:
Not likely

Detailed Answer:
It is unlikely if you are moving about and do not have calf swelling. Severe calf swelling, pain and tingling and numbness indicate possibility of a clot and also pain on squeezing the calf muscles.
