Suggest Treatment For Swollen Painful Knee And Difficulty Walking

default
Posted on Fri, 26 Dec 2014
Question: Four days ago I fell on our bathroom floor and hit the outside of my leg, pretty hard, very close to the knee. It is still swollen and extremely sore. After sitting for a length of time, I can hardly stand and very painful and feels 'stiff' to walk; actually limping. I have A-Fib and because of some problems, had to begin a blood thinner. Because of that, I thought that area, where I fell, would no doubt bruise. There is no bruising. The blood thinner medication has me nervous, but don't really know why! I felt I should call someone, but didn't know who to contact...my primary care dr. or my heart dr. (because of the blood thinner). Do you believe this will disappear with time or should I still be concerned? Tylenol does nothing and that's the only pain med I'm allowed to take. Thank you! XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
It is hematoma, it will gradually resolve with time.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

After going through your query I came to know that you got injury to outside of your leg and you got hematoma. Hematoma will gradually resolve by itself. If swelling increase than only you should be concerned. You should call your primary care physician as he can assess your overall condition. For pain relief Tylenol can be taken as this is only pain medicines you are allowed to take. However it is unlikely to be fracture but x ray may be done to rule out fracture. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
