Posted on Tue, 3 Feb 2015
Question: What is this bug everyone seems to have? I have a stomach ache (right under breastbone) occassional nausea and extreme tiredness. My roomate has the same symptons. Do we need an antibiotic or what do we need to get over it? I've had it for about a week and a half and just about the time I think it's gone and I start feeling better it starts all over again.

Brief Answer:
You might have Gastroesophageal reflux disease/Gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mam!

Welcome to HealthcareMagic!

I understand your concern.Your symptoms makes me think of gastroesophageal reflux disease/gastritis.You will only need some antibiotic if you have gastritis due to a bug called Helicobacter pylori. You can try taking prilosec empty stomach to get some relief. Please eat frequent small meals and sit straight for at least half an hour after having food. This will prevent any reflux thus decreasing breast bone pain.

You should also check your hemoglobin level and thyroid profile to rule out anemia or hypothyroidism as the cause for your extreme tiredness.

Hope this helps.Feel free to ask more.

That's all well and good but since my roommate has the same symptons, it leads me to believe this is some kind of bug as I don't think both of us would be suffering from the exact same symptoms at the exact same time. I just had blood work last month and everything was fine. I'm not really impressed with this diagnosis. Not money well spent in my opinion

Brief Answer:
Please take Norfloxacin and tinidazole tablets

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mam!

Thank you so much for writing back.

Since you both are staying in same place and eating same food and drinking same water, the problem might be contaminated food or water. It is very difficult to specify any bug just by reading your symptom.Your intestine might be infected bu some bacteria like E.coli,S.aureus,C.jejuni etc which can only be confirmed by examining a stool culture.

I would suggest you to take a 5-7 days course of a tablet with a combination of Norfloxacin and tinidazole. This will definitely give both of you releif.Avoid any undercooked food(such as beef, pork)and try to have a hygenic and healthy diet.

Hope this helps. If you have no further queries ,please rate this answer and close this discussion.
Thank you!

We were both fine until 10 days ago when my roommate completed a one week temporary job at the convention center for the tech Convention. I'm thinking she picked up some bug from the convention, what will people attending from all over the world, and brought it home with her.
She had the symptoms for about 3-4 days before I started having them.

Brief Answer:
you are right!

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mam!

Thank you for writing back.

She might be a carrier of some bacteria which she is continuously shedding. As I mentioned earlier a stool culture will confirm the diagnosis.

I would still prescribe above mentioned antibiotics for your relief.

Please see a physician and get confirmed diagnosis.
