Question: I have celiac and have an autro immune reaction to soy (resulting in skin lesions on my legs). My current issue is I have been having angioedema with very hot, itchy neck and face. To the point of an ER visit for anaphyatic (SP?) reasons. Extrreme swelling of feet and hands. Allergy meds dont help (perscription were done). I currently are on a Keto-gentic diet and it seems to keep most sytoms in check.
My co-work saw an article of someone with my same symptoms, she said it was something about "a cellular issue", but she can't find the article again. My doctors are stumped, saying I am "a very iteresting case". I've seen an interest, allegist, and others.
Any Ideas?? (I think it's something that is genetic/autoimmune, but...)

Hi XXXX, Yes it is interesting.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, Welcome to HCM.

Yes it is interesting. The only way to solve this are three options---

One-- to get an allergy test done for food and other items and de-sensitize according to reports.

Two--take a course of Corticosteroids, that will cure.

Three--give sample for allergy testing and without waiting for reports, start cortico steroids.

Later on, after the reports come, de-sensitisation can be done. I did not understand about 'cellular issues' You can revert back if you have further queries.

I have had a full round of food and enviromental allergen testing done. The only result was milk in the blood and dog and cats (of that I already knew about). The allergist stands by that he thinks the milk is a false positive, as I do not react to it (I currently have milk and cheese on the keto diet and no reactions).
The "cellular" reference was something to do with an illness that involved individual cells/DNA/genetics.

I am only trying this website as I have has too many other doctor visits without answers, too many steroid treatments. Everytime I start to swell, I take a course of steriods of some type.

I do feel there is a correct diagnosis, it just isn't an easy one. My next round of doctors will be off to the Mayo, in XXXXXXX MN. I am hoping someone will figure it out before then.

Thanks- XXXXXXX

Hi XXXX, I've spent the morning doing a bit of research for you. Here's what I've found

Hi XXXX, I've spent the morning doing a bit of research for you. Here's what I've found---

'Scientists at the National Institutes of Health, and their colleagues, have discovered that a gene called BACH2 may play a central role in the development of diverse allergic and autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, asthma, Crohn's disease, celiac disease, and type-1 diabetes. In autoimmune diseases, the immune system attacks normal cells and tissues in the body that are generally recognized as “self” and do not normally trigger immune responses.'

So your 'allergy' may just be an 'auto immune problem. As long as your ketogenic diet works it is fine. But your doctor can explore the option of trying simple preventive drugs to suppress auto immunity--there are many. This may be the solution in your case.

Hope it helps.
Regards and wish you the best.
