Suggest Treatment For Sharp Pain In The Left Hand In An Elderly Person

Question: Hello, my name is Matt. I'm 62 years old and like most people my age new pains show up daily. This past couple of weeks I have been experiencing pain above my left hand thumb just above the wrist. It's a kind of sharp pain and is triggered by movement and there seems to be a clicking of the tendon when it happens. I don't recall doing anything to cause it so I'm thinking it's associated with arthritis. Do you have any guesses as to what it might be and how I should deal with it?

Brief Answer:
Can be tendonitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain above the left hand thumb that aggravates with a movement is more likely to be due to an inflammation of the tendon - tendonitis. It can be related to carpal tunnel syndrome.
You need to give it some rest for a while, use hot fomentation twice a day and local ointment for pain relief. Avoid gripping and lifting objects altogether. Keep it in most comfortable position or use a splint/crepe bandage most of the time (including at night) for best results. Watch for worsening of symptoms like increase in pain, appearance of swelling and tingling numbness in fingers. If you get any of these, visit your physician and get a check up done followed by investigations like X ray or MRI.
I hope this answers your query.
