Question: Hi, my name is Suzanne. I have been having severe stomach cramps since Saturday. They come in waves, make me grit my teeth, feel almost as painful as labor cramps. I have has alternating constipation and a little but not much, diarrhea. Today I have not eaten much, I finally ate a banana. Don't feel hungry. Not sure what to do at this point. I have a history of candida, IBS and food intolerances. Have cramps both before and after I eat.

Brief Answer:
Infective or IBS.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
Since the cramps are of recent onset with diarrhea so we consider the possiblity of acute Gastro intestinal infection at first.
In such scenario we usually prescribe a combination antibiotic containing Ofloxacin and Ornidazole.
A combination of Pantoprazole and Domperidone further helps.
For acute cramps you may take Tablet Drotaverine.
Now if your problem persists even after taking this treatment you would need to start treatment of IBS.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.

Is there a possibility I could have giardia? I live in Alaska, close to a river (although I do not drink it). I also work with dogs and cats that sometimes present with giardia. I do intend to go to the doctor tomorrow and see if I can get your recommended prescriptions.

Thank you for your help, Suzanne

Brief Answer:
Yes can be Giardiasis

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.
Yes it can be Giardiasis and the antibiotics we have discussed in the previous answers are helpful in eliminating Giardia infection too.
However I would recommend you to get the prescription from your doctor as these antibiotics are prescription drugs.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
