Suggest Treatment For Severe Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy
Question: My son is 31 with severe spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy . Developed a cough after having the flu about 8 weeks ago. He coughs continuously for about two hours immediately upon rising. No fever no runny nose but thick saliva. Suction is clear white frothy and has bouts of cough and sneeze at the same time. We have been at doctor office with diagnosis of allergies and GERD. Lastly with pneumonia with hospitalization. Lungs cleared up but cough and thick saliva remain I am aty wits end have no idea what to do or where to go now

Is there any nasal obstruction or post nasal drip ( sinus secretions dripping back into throat) ?

Based on your clinical details, it appears to be allergic bronchitis secondary to sinusitis.
I suggest you to follow these measures to overcome cough.
1. To consult ent surgeon and get ent examination (to rule out post nasal drip of sinusitis inducing the cough), x- ray chest, blood tests (absolute eosinophilic count, serum IgE) to rule out allergic rhinitis. depending on the examination reports further treatment is required accordingly.
2. To start mucolytic (to thin the secretions) syrup. ambroxyl 2 teaspoons twice daily and antiallergic medications like l-montis (citrizine + montelukast) one tab at bed time. Please do this in consultation with his doctor.
3. As such, cerebral palsy persons do have secretions. periodic suctions, chest physiotherapy is needed.
Kindly discuss with your treating doctor about these instructions, investigations and medications, as they are prescribed medications, need to be taken under medical supervision.
