Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In Right Buttocks After A Hip Replacement Surgery

default
Posted on Wed, 10 Feb 2016
Question: Last XXXXXXX I had hip replacement surgery. In December I was walking better than I had for a couple of years. Happy with the surgery. About 2 weeks ago I developed a severe pain in my right buttocks area. It is extremely painful when I put weight on it and walk. After a few steps it seems better, but still hurts. After a few minutes the pain wraps around through my lower back. Should I be worried about something being wrong with the hip replacement? What should I do to try to get back to walking?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for submitting your question.

The pain you were describing sounds as if it may be related to a "pinched" nerve or due to possible local inflammation/irritation, however it is difficult to definitively determine the etiology without a physical examination. Post-surgical pain may not necessarily represent failure of the hip replacement. It would be very reasonable to schedule an appointment with your physician or surgeon for a proper physical examination & assessment. For the meantime, gentle stretching & range of motion exercises for yor back and hips are advisable as long as it doesn't worsen the pain. Also, you may try warm soaks or compresses to the painful area. Please do not let the pain continue on for too long, in order to prevent any damage or injury to the area.

Sincerely,
Dr Galamaga
