Question: I purposefully took active pills over when I should have had my withdrawal bleed. I had sex with my bf with a condom over that week which would have been 10 days ago he didnt ejaculate. Previius to that we had se 2 weeks bwfore which would have beem 10 days before my last pill for the month but instead i went right to the next pack. I've had some pregnancy symptoms this past week and am not do to be done with my pill pack for another week. I took 1 pill 6 hours late 4 days before we had sex. Could I be pregnant.I had a little bit of nausea last week and I noticed my XXXXXXX bumps on my breasts are more prominent My breasts aren't sore, I'm not peeing more than normal unless I'm drinking alot which I do. Maybe a metal taste in mouth maybe but I've never experienced that before, I had very light pink discharge like yoy could hardly see it a couple days and 1 bright red discharge

Brief Answer:
The chance of pregnancy is extremely low

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

A pregnancy test will take about two weeks to turn positive. Given that you had intercourse more than two weeks ago, a pregnancy test should be accurate in terms of indicating whether or not you are pregnant. The episode 10 days ago did not involve ejaculation and also involved a condom, so this could not lead to pregnancy. Just continuing the active pills does not increase the chance of pregnancy but sometimes it can lead to some breakthrough bleeding which is what you might be noticing when you mentioned the light pinkish / red discharge.

Also, the slight variation in terms of when you took the pills on the one day (6 hours late) would not have affected the effectiveness of the pills either. This is of low concern.

That all being said, nothing is 100% and you should:

1. Check a pregnancy now and again in about one week
2. Consider stopping the pills, expect a withdrawal bleed, and restart on Sunday (sort of an earlier restart)
3. If you are anxious about the effectiveness of the pill, consider the Mirena IUD - it is much more effective and you don't have to worry about missing a pill.

I have an apt to get an iud next month. I am very good at taking the pill and we always use a condom. I know nothing is 100 so I'll take another test next week. can you tell me why the XXXXXXX bumps showed up besides them being part of my body or am I just freaking out about them? I am not having any food evasions, problems with smell, nausea, slight cramping sometimes but I'm not sure if it's in my mind, a little back ache but I've been to the chiropractor mutiple times this past week too, breasts don't hurt, areolas aren't darker, no crazy peeing. possible reasons for metalic taste?

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms are likely hormonal but not related to pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
I think that the IUD sounds like a great idea in your case. With regard to concerns about pregnancy, given that you take the pill regularly and use condoms, concerns about pregnancy are very likely unfounded.

I have heard your complaint before - the metallic taste in the mouth and I will be honest - there is really no great explanation. It could be related to hormonal changes as I have heard it described during the second half of cycles. It could be that you are having some version of a cycle even though you are on the pill and it could very well be related to skipping the placebo pills. But based on how you are stating these facts, it seems clear to me that you are worried about pregnancy.

I am fairly certain that your pregnancy test will be negative.

thank you sir! I didn't have any pregnancy signs with my 6 year old so that's probably why I'm freaking out a bit and by doing that I'm sure I'm not helping the situation. I haven't had Intercourse for almost 2 years till what I described to you. hoping I'm not a first time pregnant girl but if I am I'll love them. thank you for helping me relax.

I forgot to ask you about the XXXXXXX tubercles on my areolas. everything I found online say that you only get them when you are pregnant. any ideas why they are so prominent now? I realise I can stress myself out about other possible symptoms but that one's is pretty hard I'd think. like I said before my breasts don't hurt at all and the areolas don't seem to be changing color just those bumps. thanks.

Brief Answer:
They are not a specific sign of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
The changes in the glands surrounding the nipple within the areola can change related to hormones of pregnancy but also with hormones related to your cycle or that you are taking. This fact alone is not a sign of pregnancy and as I stated, the chance of pregnancy is practically zero based on what you have described.

is excess saliva and sometime a dry mouth pregnancy signs. it's like my mouth suddenly waters and sometimes feels dry. I didn't know if it was a pms thing as well or not.its not happened to me before. the last couple days I've had a couple times where I'm either quite hot or cold feeling, also tired today but I've not slept well and had a sick child recently. am I creating things because I'm stressing? breasts still don't hury, nausea a bit but might be stressed. if I relax that usually goes away. still can't really tell on the metalic taste, sometimes I think so and sometimes not.

Brief Answer:
No these are not signs of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Excess saliva and dry mouth are not signs of pregnancy. Also, temperature instability is not a sign of pregnancy. Overall these are all non-specific symptoms - in other words, they are not specific to pregnancy and could be from other causes. The most likely explanation for the full constellation of just not feeling right is that it is related to your cycle. Please do not stress about this and review my prior answers for clarity.

last question. are there symptoms that are specific to pregnancy besides a missed period? also I will take a pregnancy test next Tuesday and if it comes back negative can I be fairly certain I'm not pregnant? I was planning on continuing to take active pills till my March 21 appointment to get my iud thinking that would be the safest way to keep from possibly ovulating anywhere between now and then. thank you for your help sir.

Here is is a list of the most common pregnancy symptoms

Detailed Answer:
1. Late or missed period
2. Lighter than normal period
3. Breast tenderness
4. Nausea
5. Mild uterine cramping without bleeding

The others that you mentioned that you were experiencing I would NOT put in the top 5 list. I sincerely hope that this helps.
