Suggest Treatment For Severe Itching On Hand

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Dec 2015
Question: Hi, Last evening the back of my left hand was itching, it felt almost is if it was under the skin. I scratched for a while then applied Sarna lotion. the back of my hand started to swell. I applied an ice pack, I finally stopped scratching and slept. The swelling is still present. It now feels as though there is a cool internal sensation moving up my arm. I can not tell if the swelling is moving up or not..hard to tell. I do not see any red marks moving up my arm though am a bit nervous. I also live in an area where I feel the medical attention is less than par. I do not have a regular doctor at this point.

Brief Answer:
Urticaria, allergic response

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on your description, it appears to be an acute urticarial episode. Topical calamine lotion would help reduce local irritation. Oral antihistamines like cetirizine or hydroxyzine would be the appropriate medication for the allergic response and swelling. The cool internal sensation or paresthesia can occur with such a response. this will most likely subside with the anti allergic medication. T These medication are mostly available OTC. If the swelling persists or worsens then you should go to a doctor to examine the area and advise a Doppler ultrasound and other investigations to look for alternative causes.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
