Suggest Treatment For Severe Coughing In A 3 Year Old
Question: hi my 3 year old daughter is coughing and doctor has given Smucolite but keeps coughing.. please guide..

1. How long is she Coughing?
2. Any fever or running nose?
3. Any associated Wheezing, does she get cough often or seseasonally?
4. How is she otherwise eating and drinking well?
From the medicine smucolite I think that your doctor has given expectorant which will bring out the secretions. Initially for few days it may appear that cough is increasing but that is how the secretions come out.
It should settle soon.
If cough worsens or she gets any other symptoms better to consult your doctor again.

first there was a fever for 4 days then she developed this cough.. which increases yesterday and she could not sleep last night..then we went to our paediatrician today he gave the Smucolite..
she is a fussy eater.. always a struggle to feed her.. she has a running nose too. no wheezing yet...
we apply Vicks vaporup which gives a bit of relief. but she resting now but wakes up every 10 mins with cough.. need some help urgently on this.. as a result me or my wife has to be awake all night..

If there is associated running nose, you can try antihistamines like Phenergan.
I usually prescribe around 3 ml twice daily for such patients in my clinic.
This along with the present medicines should help her temporarily.
Do consult your doctor again if she does not settle.
