Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough While Having Asthma

Question: I have asthma and allergies, I take advair and singulair and claritan before I go to bed. I am not wheezing when I fall asleep but within a few minutes after falling asleep I wake up coughing violently many times until I vomit. I then wheeze for several minutes then the wheezing subsides until I fall asleep again. This cycle can happen many times a night or just a few times and usually only happened when I had bronchitis (so I thought) It turns out I am ashmatic and did not know it, I am scared to fall asleep but the lack of sleep is really wearing on me. I have to work and don't dare miss any more time since I am the sole bread winner of our family.

Yes I have had the testing done. My pulmonologist seems to think my asthma is controlled since I am usually not wheezing during the day. I have had these symptoms for over a week straight now.

yes I take advair 200/50 2x per day and this past week I have had to use my nebulizer or inhaler (both albuteryl) about 2x per day. I am also on singulair 1 x per day and claritan 2x per day. I cough lots during the day but don't wheeze much at all. I just fell asleep again about 20 minutes ago and again woke up coughing until I vomited. I have only been able to sleep about 45 minutes all night and have to go to work in only 2 hours. Should I go to the ER?

This is the worst night I have had so far. I did catch a cold from my husband and started having the symptoms he has had all week. I have been very careful to not contaminate myself however since I was in the hospital in february I have been pretty much been sick most of the time since.

The only time I have felt good is when I am on 30mg prednisone/day for a week then 20 for a week. The last week when I was on 10 mg per day I started getting the symptoms back again. But I can't keep taking that because it is so bad for me.

Brief Answer:
Yes, you should definitely go to ER.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
In my opinion, you should definitely go to ER and get done chest x ray to rule out lung infection.
Asthma patients are at increased risk of lung infection. You were also on steroids (prednisone). This will also prone you for lung infection.
So consult emergency room and get done chest x ray.
You will need injectable antibiotics, bronchodilator and other supportive drugs.
Honestly speaking, your asthma is not at all controlled.
So also consult pulmonologist and discuss all these.
Hope I have solved your query. If you are not having further queries, then please close the conversation and rate my answer.
