Suggest Treatment For Severe Chest Pain After Waking Up

Posted on Fri, 18 Nov 2016
Question: I've been up since 2 this morning with pains in my chest and both of my arms, left worse than right. It feels like I have XXXXXXX horses in them from shoulder to fingers but it never goes away. I thought it might be indigestion and took some pepto bismol but it doesn't seem to be helping. No difficulty breathing or swallowing and no sweating. Hot showers seem to make the pain go away while I'm in there but as soon as I get out it comes back.

Brief Answer:
greatest concern is heart

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for your question.
Of course whenever we hear about chest pain moving out into the arms we are concerned about heart problems. If you have risks for heart disease including diabetes, smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol or family history of early heart attack then you should probably go to Emergency and have them make sure this is not coming form your heart.
If you do not have any of those risks, then it may be coming from another source. The hot showers make it sound like it is coming from the chest wall muscles. If this is the case then try ibuprofen, heat (as you have been doing) and gentle stretches. It is also important for you to stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol and caffeine.
If the pain is not resolving soon you should see your doctor for evaluation and treatment.
