Brief Answer:
as explained in details.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history of a 59 year old male having severe stomach pain - feeling the need to pass a bowel movement - unable to - pain spreading from lower abdomen to genitals - took dulcolax - not visited a Doctor ...

This is called tenesmus and can come when there is severe colitis or fecolith impaction; other causes can be IBS if you are a known patient, intestinal obstruction like intususception
Please give additional information:
Is there any bloating, nausea, vomiting, fever or chills?
Is this for the first time or has happened before also?
Any other medical history?

I would advise you the following:
Better to go to ER.
Clinical evaluation and examination
Tests of blood, stool if it happens, urine.
X-ray of the abdomen in standing position to see for any intestinal obstruction and fecolith impaction.
To get anti-spasmodic and other medication/managment as per the clinical findings and reports of investigations.

Feel free to ask further
Regards

Dr. Chandrakant:

I do not feel any bloating, nausea, fever or chills and have not vomited or felt the need to vomit.

I have no history of IBS.

This is the first time this has happened. I have never even suffered constipation before. I usually have the opposite problem (diarrhea) when sleep deprived or highly stressed.

Since taking the Dulcolax, I have had several liquid bowel movements and the pain has gone.

Is it possible that the Dulcolax is resolving my problem?
Do I still need to go to the ER?

Thank you very much for your help.

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,
Thank you for your feedback.

Noted your findings.

Yes, probably Dulcolax has helped you, as it has caused liquid bowel movements and that the pain has gone.

There are no other problems as you have mentioned.

Therefore, you may please watch for the progress and visit ER, only if the moment you feel that there is something amiss or happening more than usual.

Regards
