Question: Respected Sir,
My mother was prescribed Relicalm plus and Prothiadin at XXXXXXX Clinic(Ranchi,India) in 1991.Initially she recovered from Scizophrenia(i think) but the disease keeps on recurring from time to time.During this problem she speaks too much and gradually doubts everybody.Main problem is that she doesn't want to take these medicines willingly. We secretly give it in bread or milk. After taking these medicines she keeps sleeping throughout the day.Is there any better alternative to these medicines with least side effect.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,

Thank you for your query.

First of all I would like to know what are the symptoms she has at present?

I would like to know this because relicam plus is given for schizophrenia and prothiaden is given for depression mostly, so is there any depressive features she has.

Now a days there are many newer medication available at present like Blonanserine, Amisulpride, Clozapine, Olanzepine, Quitiapine, Ziprasidone, etc.

Also your mother is not taking willingly. An alternative can be a long acting medicine. There are many long acting injections available now a days with lesser side effects like risperdal consta, invega sustenna etc.

Awaiting your response.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Need long acting anti psychotic injections

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,

As you told your mother is having sometimes problem and sometimes she behaves normally.

And also she is not willing to take medication so there are two ways for her treatment,
1.There are some medication which is available in mouth dissolving form and also tasteless, colorless and odorless, so you can give such medication in food.

2.There are many medication which is available as long acting injection and that injection you can give her on monthly basis and then after you don't need any oral medication to give her.

Risperdal consta and invega susttena are two long acting anti psychotic injections which has lesser side effects, other injections also available like Flupenthixole, zuclopenthixole, haloperidol etc ...

Discuss with your treating doctor about this medication and injections.

Thank you
