Suggest Treatment For Respiratory Problem In A Baby

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Apr 2015
Question: Hi,

My 3 months old baby was suffering from respiratory difficulties. The doctor has prescribed Ventorlin Inhaler 100 mcg to be administered 4 times a day with 2 dosage each using a spacer and face mask. The dosage has been instructed to be gradually brought down increasing the intervals. Is this alright for the baby's age and will it cause any side effects to the baby?

Brief Answer:
The prescription dose is right,Very minimal side effect

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Ventorlin contains salbutamol a bronchodilator. It is used to relieve the respiratory distress(may be associated with noisy breathing) by decreasing the spasm of airways.

Salbutamol in infant can be used by nebulisation using the nebuliser and mask or by the metered dose inhaler using a spacer and mask. Both the methods are effective, but nebulisation has been found more user friendly.

Salbutamol can be used in infants of 3 months or above; as by this time the receptors on which salbutamol acts, are adequately developed.

The dose of salbutamol for this age is 2 puffs 4-6 hourly as per requirement. As the spasm relieves the dosing interval should be increased and then it may be stopped, once respiratory distress resolves and clinically there is no spasm.
As it is inhalational,it acts mainly on the respiratory tract and absorption in blood is minimal. There may be mild increase in heart rate or irritability, other side effects are very rare if taken by inhalation.

I would be glad to answer if you have further query
Regards
