Posted on Tue, 2 Feb 2016
Question: Hi, 6 days ago I had a skin tag/mole excised on my face at the corner of my mouth. The nurse practioneer then cartarized it and said to keep vasoline on it. It has been 6 days and the lesion seems to be extremely slow in healing and is a little red around the carterization. Should I put an antibiotic cream on it or continue to put vasoline on it. The instructions given to me states not to put antibiotic cream on it (ei. Neosporin) I'm not sure why but I am concerned about the slight redness around the carterization. how long should I expect for this this to heal? thanks

Brief Answer:
There could be some infection at the treated area

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have read your query and I have understood your concern.

It is a possibility that the treated area has developed some infection and is therefore the area surrounding it is red. A raw area, devoid of epidermis can readily get infected with bacteria. The only reason for which your were asked to not apply neosporin is because neosporin can cause an allergic sensitivity reaction in some, though not all. It has a 20% risk of causing allergy at the site of reaction. I suggest you to use a different antibiotic e.g either 2% mupirocin cream, if that is available Or else you may use neosporin.
