default
Posted on Thu, 25 May 2017
Question: Hello,
I am xxxxxxxxx I have been battling dry lips for the past two years. Two months ago I got this rashes kind of redness in my lower lips for which I consulted doctors in this forum as well as personally they said it could be allergy or some bacterial infection and gave me antibiotic for one week and cetrizine for two weeks followed by hydrocortisone acetate cream to be applied on affected area. It got better in one week . I used to apply Vaseline in huge amounts after this episode I completely stopped. XXXXXXX and only apply them when the lips are extremely flaky and dry . Last two days the lower lips towards the vermillion border I could see small pimples like only this when I touch it looks more of a split or scratch rather than a bump . It is not painful but the appearance is very scary . I am so scared of herpes that I had taken two tests from different centre six months ago and both came negative . I have had no lip kiss nor drank anybody's left over water or juice . I am sending you pictures taken today please help me

Brief Answer:
Doesn't look like herpes infection, seems to be irritant reaction

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for being at HealthcareMagic
I have gone through your complaints as well as reviewed the attached photographs.
It doesn't look like herpes infection.
It seems to be an irritant reaction to something you have applied on the lips or eaten.
I would recommend you to apply hydrocortisone cream on the affected areas twice daily for 5-7 days.
This should help in resolving your problem.

Hello doctor,
Thanks for your reply. I have a couple of queries
1) I always get this redness on around my lips immediately after having food no matter whether it's outside or home made why is that so ? I was never allergic to any food as far as I or my parents remember
2) I used to apply a lot of Vaseline but since last couple of months I have stopped using them and use them only if I feel very very dry still I always have this peeling dry flaky lips for some days and for some days it looks like there is an irritation going on my lips . I am taking vitamin e 600 , vitamin b 12 , I am also taking anti depression tablets and sleeping pills as per my doc advise for the past two months could this be because of that , my periods are normal though.
3) can I use sebamed lip balm will it cause irritation . Sometimes the skin surrounding the lower lips burns I don't know why it is sometimes accompanied by redness sometimes not , I have attached few pics where you can see the irritation is not there today but the right corner side of lower lips that is some redness no itching or burning was or pain though . I have a very oily and sensitive skin please recommend some routine for the same
4) can I thread my upper lip and eyebrows . I always buy a new thread box and give it the lady who does the threading each time is it ok . Too much of hair growth in my face that is reason I am asking you
5) how is herpes is passed . Can it be passed via food items .

Brief Answer:
Answers below

Detailed Answer:
Redness alone without any itching or other complaints is nothing serious.
It can occur in some persons but there is no specific reason for it.
Peeling and dryness of the lips doesn't seem to be related to the medicines you are taking.
It can be related to your sensitive skin.
You apply a cream containing white soft paraffin on the lips frequently.
You can use sebamed lip balm. It won't cause irritation.
Burning in the skin around the lower lip can also be due to sun exposure.
Avoid going out in direct sun.
For your sensitive skin I would recommend you to use a cleanser like cetaphil cleansing lotion for sensitive skin for washing face twice daily.
Also avoid oiling of scalp, avoid cosmetics, reduce the intake of sugary foods and avoid facials and scrubbing on the face.
You can go for threading of your eyebrows and upper lips.
It is ok to use a new thread box everytime.
Herpes infection cannot pass through food.
It is either through direct contact from an infected person or use of infected fomites .

Brief Answer:
Could be related to food, apply white soft paraffin cream 2-3 times in day

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I have reviewed the recent pictures and can see a red area.
It can be because of panner and cheese.
Try avoiding these for few days to check whether these are the cause of your problem.
Besides this apply cream containing white soft paraffin on the lips 3-4 times in a day regularly for 2-3 weeks.
This should take care of dryness as well as redness.

Hello doctor,
The redness in that area I mentioned the other day is diminishing slowly after I applied oraways cream . I have a doubt I feel that my left side of the lower lips is always slightly bigger than the right side I mean asymmetrical but when I show it to anyone they say they can't find any difference is it some swelling or is it normal for people to have asymmetrical lips . No pain as such but it annoys me . Can you suggest a cream which contains white soft paraffin that I can buy in medical stores in XXXXXXX . Also can you please explain what do you mean by fomite objects ? U am sending you some pics please do take a look . If I wash my tumblers and spoon Each time before I use it then am I safe from herpes infection . Also how about the plastic straws I am super scared to use them that's the reason I don't drink any juice or ice creams outside . My social life has come to an absolute full stop because of this fear . If the parlour lady who is threading my eyebrows and upper lip is it safe . I mean I will give her the brand new thread but still I can't force her to wash her hands before she touches me . Since I have super sensitive skin and lips please suggest creams moisturiser and also I have extremely oily skin . Can I use homemade wax made out of sugar honey and turmeric for removing hair from upper lips .

Brief Answer:
Slight asymmetry seen which appears normal

Detailed Answer:
I have reviewed the attached photographs and I can appreciate slight difference in the size of two sides of your lower lip.
But the difference is slight and this asymmetry seems to be normal.
Cream containing white soft paraffin easily available are moisturex soft cream or parasoft cream.
Fomites are the objects which are used routinely like comb, brush, door handles, etc.
You can use your own thread while going to the parlour but I don't think the hands of parlour lady can transmit the infection if she's not having any active lesions.
Don't be so sacred of herpes infection.
No need to wash your tumbler and spoon everytime and you can avoid using straw.
Herpes infection is very common.
80-90 percent of individuals in the young adult age are infected with herpes infection even in XXXXXXX
You can use cetaphil moisturising lotion as a regular moisturiser.
You can use homemade wax for waxing upper lips.
