Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: I had fluid drained from my right elbow. Elbow looked like an egg. My right arm ached in shoulder area for a year, but improved when my elbow swelled. Now, suddenly, my left elbow has a lot of fluid= swollen like an egg. I do not remember hitting my elbow or injuring it. I am 64 year old male. I played a lot of sports and did injure my elbows when I was younger. But why now out of nowhere am I getting fluid on my elbows and need to get it drained. It does not go away by itself. Thank you.

The picture I am sending has been for the last week. It is my left elbow. I had my right elbow drained 1 month ago. It was swollen for 3 months until I had it drained. My right elbow is fine now. I am not diabetic. I have arthritis in my lower back causing stenosis. I do have back pain, and neuropathic pain especially down left leg. I played professional basketball until i was 38 years old. So I have old injuries to shoulders , elbows and all over. No metabolic diseases. I have an old prescription for a WSR or Sed rate that I never did. But my blood work over the years has been normal. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Please consider these explanation

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Looking at your description this is pointing towards joint effusion owing to cartilage or joint damage during sports injuries

In my opinion Apart from draining fluids, your doctor should address the underlying cause for the joint effusion which could be articular cartilage or joint injury
Osteoarthritis of the joint
Chronic inflammatory disorder

You should also visit a physiotherapist for exercise programme and radiation therapy for proper healing of joint after the drainage of fluid.

Hope this answers your question
Best wishes
