Suggest Treatment For Raised Bump On Back Of Skull

default
Posted on Tue, 30 Dec 2014
Question: I have a raised bump or ridge in the middle of the back of my skull on the left side. I can't figure out if it is just a normal part of my skull or not. I don't ever remember noticing it before. It almost seems like a bump you would develop from hitting your head, but I have had no injury. It is somewhat tender to touch, like a bruise, but I have also been pressing on it for the past day. I would say it is probably about an inch in diameter, somewhat oblong, and has depressions on either side of it. Is this something I should worry about or go get checked? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Most probably subcutaneous lipoma.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns. Most probable nature of your skull bump is Lipoma or enlargement of sebaceous glands of skin. Other causes include infection of hair roots, dermoid cyst ( skin cysts), osteoma ( local enlargement of bone) other secondary lesions, etc.The nature of lesion is determined clinically, that means a careful inspection by a Doctor is needed and certain features of lesion ( mobility, consistence, temperature, pain or not etc) need to be checked. So I suggest you to consult your primary care Doctor and discuss check up of the lesion. Most bumps are harmless and need no treatment.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

It is not like a lipoma or cyst. It almost feels like a ridge on my skull but is tender and there is not one on the opposite side. The ridge feels like a oblong oval and hard like bone. I am just not sure if it is normal part of my skull or if this sounds like an area for concern.

Thank you again.

Brief Answer:
Maybe it was there.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for asking again.

If it feels like bone structure then probably it was there from long time, and maybe you didn't notice it before. If you continue to press or mess with it, it's going to be tender on and on. I recommend you not to press or scratch it for a few and let's see how it is going. If it tends to increase the size, still is tenderness after few weeks, then you need to consult your primary care Doctor. If not, there is nothing to worry about.

Hope this helps. If you have further questions feel free to ask.
