Question: Yes please, my brother who lives in XXXXXXX has been having problems eating since last XXXXXXX 2014. The VA has him on a feeding tube (has been since July) he has lost 40 pounds and doesn't seem to be getting any better. His speech is getting worst it's really an effort to talk especially longer than a few minutes. Should he be on some kind of therapy? I'm in reHab in XXXXXXX for a few more weeks, then I 'll be there to help take care of him. Thank you for your help! YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
Speech and nutritional therapy

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for contacting HCM with your medical concerns.

I am sorry to hear that your brother is ill and needing to be feed with a feeding tube. I would like to know what is his underlying diagnosis that he needs to be feed with a feeding tube?

If he has a neurological problem there may not be many options. In my practice I see patients with all different diagnosis that can cause failure to eat. I usually try an appetite stimulant like mirtazapine or Megace. If these measures don't help then a feeding tube maybe inserted to help maintain nutrition.

While starting these medications I also consult the help of a certified speech therapist and nutritionist. Together than can give therapy to improve his ability to eat. This may take several weeks to months to show improvement.

Please give me more information as to your brothers condition so I may give you more detailed answer

What is his diagnosis?
How long has he had it?
What medications is he currently taking?

Waiting for your response,
