Suggest Treatment For Painful Lump On Lower Right Back

default
Posted on Fri, 22 Jan 2016
Question: Hi Doc and Happy New Year to you. I was cleaning the oven about a month ago and felt what appeared to be some muscle strain on the right side of my lower back. I had a motorcycle accident 16 years ago and this area was badly bruised and damaged. A large lump has appeared and I would say it appears a rib has dislodged itself and is very painful. What diagnosis is there for this condition and what treatment or controls would be best to alleviate the lump and pain

Brief Answer:
Hematoma or a muscle tear likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The appearance of lump and pain is likely to be due to a muscle tear or a hematoma formation in the area.
You need to get a x-ray or preferably a CT scan of the area done which can locate soft tissue injuries very easily. Apply some cold compresses by wrapping ice in a towel and take some anti inflammatory pain killer like ibuprofen and paracetamol (acetaminophen) after consulting your general physician.
If the pain persists or you develop any new symptom like fever, restriction of movement etc. then seek prompt medical consultation .Otherwise just take adequate rest, a healthy diet and plenty of fluids for better healing.
I hope this answers your query.

Wishing you good health.
