Brief Answer:
Infected sebaceus cyst.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Thank you for the query.

Can you please attach a photo of it? It will be much easier to give good answer.

Painful lump in this area is most likealy an infected sebaceus cyst. Due to pus presence you get pain and swelling. Redness can be present as well.
Infected cyst should be incised and drained. After healing it, it should be removed completely, otherwise it can recur. Please consult general surgeon.

This is the best I can tell not being able to see it.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thanks for your answer. It's not really an area that I could post a picture of, however, you can't see it with the naked eye anyway. I only noticed it because it felt tender & when I pressed it, I could feel the knot. I am due for my yearly pap, so I will go ahead & make an appointment with my gyn. Thanks again! XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Ultrasound can tell what it is.

Detailed Answer:
If its in the groin, hernia should be also considered. This should give pain while coughing and/or lifting heavy objects.
The best way to find out what it is, is soft tissues ultrasound.
