Question: From what I read I apparently have anserine bursitis. Pain is about 2" below right knee on inside of leg. It only hurts when I walk and is so severe at times that I need a cane. I am overweight and climb stairs at least once a day. It came on suddenly and has gotten worse over the last week. Gets somewhat better with ice and rest. What is your recommendation?

Please note..
1. Yes the symptoms that you suggest are in favor of what is known as Anserine Bursitis.
Basically it is an inflammation of the Bursa of the knee joint..

2. Yes, it can cause troublesome pain at times..

3. Please get this diagnosis confirmed.
Sometimes Osteoarthritis can cause such symptoms as well.
An X ray or Preferably MRI will help you..

4. But, if you are sure it's Anserine Bursitis then I would suggest these things..
A. It's basically a pathology related to Hamstring muscles that pose over burden on the knee joint.

B. Hence exercise helps.
You can get trained by a Physiotherapist for this..

C. Please reduce your weight..
Half of your problem will be solved once you cut down on your weight scale. That is vital and most important.
