Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Heels

Question: I started to get heel pain in my left heel about two weeks ago. I have worn orthotics' for 20 years due to high arches. I do a lot of walking outside or on a treadmill. I am 71 years old. The pain is very bad when you get out of bed and step on your foot. I have tried some ice and some stretching exercises, but the pain still seems to persist. I got a Dr. Scholes heel gem pad to wear on top my orthotics, and it helped a little. But the pain is still there. What should I go, short of going to a doctor?

I am sorry to hear that you are having heel pain. What you have is plantar fasciitis. This is caused by the tendon in your foot getting inflamed and shortening. That is why the first steps in the morning are so painful. To help reduce your pain continue the stretching exercises of the plantar tendons. Also add an anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or naproxen. If these measures don't help then see a podiatrist they maybe able to give your tips on taping the ankle and foot to help and possibly newer orthotics or injections.
