Suggest Treatment For Nausea, Vomiting And Diarrhea

Question: I am a 64 year old male generally in excellent health. 60 hours ago I experienced a bout of nausea with vomiting and diarrhea. The vomiting last for eight hours and ceased. The diarrhea continues 60 hours later. I am not hungry for regular meals and have eaten only chicken noodle soup and saltines. My stomach is unsettled but not painful. Do you think I have food poisoning or stomach flu? Thank you, XXXXXXX

Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.
The symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea are suggestive of an infection. If you had eaten any food which could have been infected, it is the probable cause.
If there was no chance of any food borne infection, it may a stomach flue.
You would be able to get an idea if you a blood complete count and a stool routine examination.
If you are not better, please do these and let me know the results.

Thank you for your response. If I do not feel better by Monday, I will get the blood complete count and a stool routine exam as you suggest. In the meantime, is there an over the counter medicine that may help such as kaopectate?

Yes, you can use Kaopectate but avoid Loperamide ( Imodium) .
