Suggest Treatment For Myopic Astigmatism In Eye

Posted on Thu, 26 Feb 2015
Question: Hello Doctor,

My son is 5 years old and has been diagonised with -1.5 cylindrical power in the right eye. The left eye is perfectly normal. The doctor has advised him to wear spectacles, otherwise she says that my kid would constantly use the left eye and hence the right eye would become inactive. Is this true? What would be the impact of this?

Brief Answer:
Yes your doctor is right.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic.

I am Dr. Dadapeer K an ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history and the reports attached with the question.

The reports show presence of myopic astigmatism in right eye with left eye being normal.
He requires to use spectacles for treatment of this refractive error.
If he does not use spectacles then the right eye with refractive error may go in for suppression resulting in the development of a condition called as ambylopia.
This is what your doctor has told that right eye can become inactive.

Hence it is true that the eye with refractive error can become inactive if it is not corrected by spectalces. This problem occurs in children as the eyes of children will be growing and any problem in the form of poor vision during this age can cause suppression of the eye with refractive error resulting in a condition called as ambylopia.

However this can be prevented easily by the use of spectacles and regular follow up to look for any change in the refractive error and its correction.

Hence no need to be worried.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Thank you

Hello Doctor,

Thanks for the very detailed response.

The doctor has advised that my son should wear spectacles continuously when at school and while watching TV and need not wear the spectacles the entire day. Is this fine or will not using the spectacles throughout the day increase the power? Will any diet / exercise help to reduce the power?

Brief Answer:
Ideally the spectacles should be worn entire day.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic.
Thank you for the follow up question.

Ideally speaking he should use the spectacles entire day. This will prevent further worsening of the refractive error.

Diet rich in Vitamin A like green leafy vegetables, carrot... will be helpful for good health of the eyes and this will also prevent worsening of refractive error.

Along with spectacles and diet I would like to advise few more tips like
Avoid watching TV from very near
Avoid reading in dim light
Regular eye checkup once in a year

Hope this is helpful to you.

Thank you

Hello Doctor,

Thanks for the explanation.

As my son is only 5 years now and as his eyes would be growing, is there a possibility that the refractive error would increase or decrease as the eye grows? Will the growth of the eye impact only the cylindrical power or the spherical power as well? With Vitamin a rich diet and by following the other advices that you had given, can the power be maintained at this same level?

Brief Answer:
Use of vitamin A diet will prevent rapid progression.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

The eye ball continues to grow till the age of 16-18 years. Hence the refractive error will change during this period. Hence both the cylindrical and spherical powers will change and it may increase or decrease.
Use of diet rich in vitamin A will prevent rapid progression of the refractive error.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Thank you
