Suggest Treatment For High Blood Pressure While Having Kidney Disease

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Jan 2016
Question: Yes. I've never had high blood pressure until 2 weeks ago. Now is 166/97. I also have 7.7 serum uric aid level. I recently had a very large (22x18) soft kidney stones removed. I'm 63 and have had diarrhea for last year with history of small bowl obstruction and 2 failed hiatal hernia repair failures. This has resulted in severe scarring and Gerd. I'm not sure how any of this is related to the rest. I am aware that the kidneys do have a relationship to blood pressure relation but not how our how much this could be related to the kidney stones I had. I also had a parathyroid tumor (non-cancer) removed 10 years ago. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
Kidney disease causing high bp explained mechanism

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concern.

There are two types of high blood pressure (bp) :
- essential (primary) for which NO cause is known so far; it tends to develop over the year. However, there are some contributing risk factors including age, stress, too little physical activity, diet low in potassium and high in sodium

High cholesterol levels can cause narrowing of the arteries , increasing the peripheral resistance leading to hypertension.

- secondary due to other health problems including kidney disease. This is because when kidney function is altered, too much sodium is not being cleared from the body, resulting in too much accumulation.

Next, the intrarenal renin angiotensin system is altered causing peripheral arterial resistance leading to hypertension.

on the other hand, hypertension itself can further damage the kidneys precipitating the progress.

It is important to know if you :
- are taking any medication on regular basis?
- have you done any blood test so far (kidney /liver/ thyroid fuction test, diabetes testing, lipid profile )?

If I was your caring doctor would advise to measure your bp twice daily, and record the results to evaluate the changes and decide if you really have high bp and how to best treat it.

Thank you!
Dr.Albana
