Suggest Treatment For High A1c And Glucose Levels While Treating GERD

Posted on Fri, 17 Jul 2015
Question: i took Nexium 40 mg for 16 years for Gerd, 1 every day and for the past 10 years have had higher A1c and Glucose. I also took Tradjenta for the last 5 years at 5 mg a day. The beginning of XXXXXXX I saw that Nexium can cause elevated blood sugar. I tested this for 3 weeks and my glucose went to a normal range of 90 to 110 and 25 to 30 points lower than it was. This was with out Tradjenta. My Doctor did an Aic then told me to continue without the Meds. I found Zantac also raises Blood Glucose and maybe more so that I'm in the 60 - 65 bracket. My Question is are there any acid lowering medications or antacids that will not raise blood glucose?

Brief Answer:
there is no documented hyperglycemia with either of them

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I've read your story carefully but I have to admit that this is the first time I've ever read that acid lowering drugs may cause hyperglycemia. Actually there are studies that suggest the exact opposite! Check out this link for example: http://www.YYYY.gov/pmc/articles/0000/

Anyway, I cannot absolutely exclude the possibility that your body works differently with these drugs because every individual is unique, but there is no documented negative effect on blood glucose control with any of the drugs that you've mentioned. Thus I can't do anything more than recommend reviewing your diet, physical activity and the rest of your drugs with your doctor. Perhaps your doctor can identify other potential causes for the worsening of your blood glucose control. Any PPI can be used.

Since the chances that an undocumented side effect occurred for such popular and heavily used for long time drugs are extremely low, I would suggest avoiding to "invent the wheel" all over again. The point is that in order to prove that an undocumented side effect has occurred, you've got to exclude other potential causes first.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
