Question: My husband is 78 yrs old. He was scheduled for an upper and a lower colonoscopy on Wed. On Monday he ate chicken soup for dinner, a protein shake for breakfast and turkey slices with chicken broth for lunch. He had 1 cup of coffee and water all day. On Tuesday, he remained on a liquid diet and started the cleansing procedure at 6:00 pm. Wednesday came and they did not do the procedure and had him take the cleanser again (Suprep). They rescheduled for Thrusday morning, and come the morning he was vomitting and completely sick and extremely weak. He was found to be animic (msp) by his heart doctor and sent to an endoc doc who scheduled the colonoscopy. My husband cancelled the procedure and since has been unable to eat anything! He has the hiccups and his stomach is acidity. He refuses to go to the emergency room, as he can not walk that far. I have been giving him Ensure, pedialyte, water and ice cream ... just to get anything in him!! Is there anything I could do to help him? I have told him that IF he is unable to eat in the morning, I am taking him to the hospital! Can you advise in getting rid of the hiccups and the acid in the stomach?

Brief Answer:
Control of gastritis will control hiccups too.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. For gastritis along with vomiting, he will need pantoprazole along with domperidone. It will reduce gastritis and vomiting.
2. Continue with bland, cold diet.
3. Plenty of hydration is essential. Give him atleast 6-8 liters of water, minimum and if required more.
4. Hiccups could be secondary to gastritis, once gastritis, comes into control, hiccups should stop. Avoid all coffee, alcohol, gastric irritants or any spicy diet , even mild for atleast 2-3 days. Cold milk will be helpful. Can take antacids like gelusil or any sucralfate combination for immediate relief.
5. This should help him in recovery. Not sure about his hemoglobin level and type of anemia.

Hope it helps.

Do we need a physicians referral for the pantoprazole and domperidone? Also, the antacids of geusil and sucralfate, are they over the counter or again do I need a prescription?

Hi,
Thanks for asking again.

All are over the counter medications.
