Suggest Treatment For Heart Palpitations Caused By Buspirone

Posted on Tue, 10 Nov 2015
Question: I am going through a rough patch with additional job stress and anxiety, which should subside when a couple of my projects are complete in December. My family doctor physician added 5mg of buspirone 2x per day to my regular medicine: 20 mg citalopram I take in the morning and 50mg trazodone I take at night to help me sleep. I took the 1st dose of 5 mg buspirone last night. I woke up today with my heart pounding. Is this a normal side effect that will stop after a few days? My heart is pounding more than it was with my increased anxiety! I'm hesitant to take another dose of the buspirone today if this is going to continue. Your thoughts?

Brief Answer:
It is likely to be a side effect of buspirone.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have carefully gone through the query and understand your concerns. Palpitations (the sense of pounding heart) is a known side effect of Buspirone. Although anxiety too can lead to increased heart rate, your sensation of heart pounding is more likely to be occurring as a side effect of buspirone. If the sensation bothers you, you may skip today's dose but be sure to get in touch with your treating physician so that he can provide you with suitable substitutes.
Let me know if I could be of further assistance.

Do you anticipate that this side effect will subside in a few days as my body adjusts, or does it known to just continue?

Brief Answer:
It is hard to predict.

Detailed Answer:
Although there is a possibility of your getting used to it, its hard to predict whether it will eventually subside. If it is not a major uneasiness, you may continue for a few days and observe. But I think that talking to your treating physician about an alternative is perhaps a better idea.
