Posted on Wed, 25 Nov 2015
Question: I have the feeling like I have to urineate all the time even after I went just a little while ago, and at times it is hard to hold. I only get up about one time a night to urineate and if I have been drinking it doesn't seem to bother me as much. These are the only semtoms I seem to poses , this just started within the last month. What might I be dealing with.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Advise you go in for a urinalysis and exam.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

Urinary frequency in a male your age, without other symptoms, is most commonly caused by either a low grade urinary tract infection, or inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis).

So the thing to do is go in to see your doctor and give a urine specimen to check for infection or inflammation in the urinary tract. Then have a digital rectal exam to feel for your prostate's size, shape, general condition.

Your doctor may want you to give the urine sample at the beginning of your visit before the prostate exam as pressing on the prostate can alter the urine specimen. But if he/she wants to check your prostatic secretions in the urine, then the urine specimen will be taken afterwards.

If the problem is prostatitis, usually a course of antibiotic (trimethoprim-smx, doxycycline, or a fluoroquinolone) will help. This will also will treat a urinary tract infection.

I hope this information helps and that you are soon doing better.
