Question: Hi Doctor, My husband ate chicken in KFC last Friday and today, since morning, he is suffering from unbearable cramps in his stomach followed by 3 loose-motions that too infected. He is also feeling nauseated but not omitted yet. He has taken one tablet of O2. Please suggest if he needs more medication or should I wait for a day before visiting doctor?

Brief Answer:
Might be suffering with food poisoning

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

As he had food outside and now he is suffering with stomach ache and loose motions, I feel that he might be suffering with Acute gastroenteritis(Food poisoning).

Here his treatment depends upon the frequency, consistency and type of organism. One tablet of O2 is not enough and he needs to take a whole course of antibiotics. Usually Tab. Norflox - TZ is prescribed for such cases and even after this course if the symptoms do not improve then a stool microscopic examination and culture and sensitivity is done to determine the type of organism infecting and the drug it is most sensitive to.

It would be better to see a local physician for examination and prescription of medicines.

Meanwhile ask him to follow these measures:
1. To drink plenty of water. Min of 3 to 4 ltrs/day along with fruit juices. Intention here is to prevent dehydration.
2. Electral powder: A XXXXXXX of electral powder to be mixed with the mentioned amount of water on the pack and to drink as and when required and after every time he passes stools.
3. Avoid spicy and oily food.
4. Give him only soft and easily digestible food like idly, upma, curd rice etc.

Hope this answers your query. If any further clarifications, will be happy to help you.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
Better to go with Norflox TZ

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the follow up.

It would be better to go for Norflox TZ as it has wider spectrum compared to O2. But as mentioned before that it is a prescription drug, you need to see a doctor for the prescription.

Hope this answers your query. If any further clarifications, will be happy to help.
