Question: I am 29. Healthy. Did a liver function test today. The SGPT level is high - the reading is 63.8 ( Method: NADH). The liver function test is otherwise ok.

Is it normal or needs immediate medical attention. Please suggest.

I am a non-vegetarian and a moderate drinker

Brief Answer:
Isolated SGPT increase can be due to fatty liver or infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The SGPT is a liver enzyme and normal range is from 0 to 40 U/ L. Your level is mildly increased if it is 63.8. This can happen in case of any mild infection or from fatty liver due to consumption of alcohol or fatty food.

2. If other test results are normal then there is no serious problem. In case of any symptoms then please get clinically examined by the doctor for infection.

3. It is suggested that you please control your drinking (2 drinks or less per occasion and not every day) and decrease taking fatty foods and do the test again after 3 months. It should get back to normal.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.
