Suggest Treatment For Fatigue And Weight Loss

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Oct 2016
Question: What am I missing? My thyroid tests are "normal" again after 6 months on Levothyroxin for an under active thyroid. Initially I felt much better with less fatigue and moodiness as well as a slight improvement in weight loss.

It has been 13 months on Levothyroxin. My PCP is happy that my thyroid tests are all "in the normal range". However, the original symptoms are all back, just not as severe, when I began the Levothyroxin therapy.

What should I do as this is very frustrating and worrisome. I did see an endocrinologist 60 days into the Levothyroxin regiment and she had no other suggestions to offer.

Thank you,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
The thyroid function is considered normal when the TSH level is corrected.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
In our practice we meet your problem very often.
There are many patients who think that the difficulty in loosing wait, fatigue, constipation ect are related to low thyroid.
In fact, once the TSH level is corrected, the hypothyroidism is considered corrected, even though the patients still have complains. It is not recommended to raise the dose of levothyroxine when the symptoms persist if the TSH level is corrected because there is a risk for causing iatrogenic hyperthyroidism that is more dangerous than hypothyroidism.
Probably the cause of your symptoms is due to low testosterone that is not within the normal ranges yet.
So you should raise the dose of testosterone and take regularly the levothyroxine tablets.
I am always at your disposal for any other questions whenever you need!

Wishing all the best,
