Question: Two days ago I started with explosive bowel movements. Not able to momentarily hold back.. My stomach makes growling noises. My husband started dry heaves this morning. We are 81 and 82 years old. What should we do? Or not do. I took loperamide hydrochloride 2 yesterday and 1 today. I'm drinking water and fixing soft boiled eggs. Our email is YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
It can be due to bacterial infection of the gut

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through.

Based on the history you have shared, it seems as if that steak you ate might be responsible as partially cooked or half cooked one can lead to bacterial contamination and in turn acute gastroenteritis. It's good that you tried loperamide but using anti motility agents alone isn't sufficient.

You may need antibiotics course like ciprofloxacin alongwith metronidazole for few days alongwith drotaverine for spasms and explosive movements as you have mentioned. Analgesics like acetaminophen can be used for pain or fever. Probiotics should also be started along side.

Meanwhile replacing the lost water and electrolytes by frequently using oral rehydration salts and water is essential and soft diets for few days avoiding high protien or greasy meals.

If problem persists kindly get a review from nearby medical facility ER for intravenous fluids and antibiotics.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
