Question: Hi Dr
My 11 months baby fell from her pram 6 days back. She cried for sometime but was fine after I breastfed her. She had a bump on her head after sometime. I visited her paed next day for her vaccination and he said she will be fine. I kept checking for the bump everyday, it seems to be going less with days passing. But today I noticed her forehead to be swollen just below the bump on the head. And it is swollen like its cushiony. I can press into it. It feels wierd as to why is it like it. I am really worried today.
Please advise as what could it be. She ain't crying when I am pressing it.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
It is the edema due to soft tissue injury

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

When a child hurts his/her head, there is one particular thing that concerns us - whether there is an internal hemorrhage. In case such a thing occurs, it would not be without any manifestations. The signs to look out for, are: 1. Vomiting 2. Severe headache 3. Altered consciousness or unconsciousness and 4. Seizures. Since none of these have occurred, you have nothing to worry.

The swelling is due to localized soft tissue injury. I have checked the attached images and find nothing abnormal. The soft tissues are in a state of healing and the edema may give rise to a boggy sort of sensation but that is normal and you need not worry about it. You also need not worry if the sensation on pressure changes with time.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards

Thanks Dr. I am partly relieved. Please also tell me:
1. Should I be using ice packs on forehead/ head to reduce it?
2. What should I be expecting of this boggy sort of injury on forehead? I mean what changes/ textures?
3. Is there any change in food pattern that I need to follow? As in can I introduce any new thing in this time. I wanted to start chicken.

Let me know when you can please.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

1. Using ice packs should be helpful.
2. Do not worry about the boggy feeling. It will dissolve completely in a 7-10 days. No comments on texture.
3. No change in food pattern required. You can start chicken or new items. Introduce one new item per week.
