Suggest Treatment For Edema In Legs And Feet

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Mar 2015
Question: I've had edema in my legs and feet for quite some time, always worse in my right leg. It is fairly well controlled with 150mg of Aldactone daily. However, I still have episodes when the swelling gets worse and then settles back down again. The past 3 days I've noticed that now it's my left leg that is swelling more. My right leg has basically no swelling and I have several varicose veins on the front of my right leg which I've never had before. Should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
some investigations needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
There can be few unrelated causes of swelling of limbs.
If you are are overweight, hypertension or diabetes then Congestive cardiac failure is quite a possibility, in which case you will have shortness of breath while walking and during wee hours of night.
Due to pulmonary hypertension leg swelling is common.
Hypothyroidism, filariasis etc. also can cause similar appearance.
Lastly deep vein thrombosis may affect some individuals to cause swelling and pain in a limb which is unilateral most of the times.
I advise you to get CBC KFT ECHO Lower limb Doppler study, Thyroid Function test and a 2 AM blood sample of blood for filariasis.
Get evaluated by a local physician to fine tune the required work up.
I hope the advise will be helpful for you.
