Posted on Mon, 11 Jul 2016
Question: I have developed dry mouth and for the last couple of weeks, my gums have gotten sore and they bleed when I brush my teeth. And I also have bad breath which in turn causes me to have a bad taste in my mouth from my foods. What could this be?

Brief Answer:
Explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

The bleeding is likely related to inflamed gums which can be due to a local infection , antibiotic use or a number of medications such as clopidogrel or aspirin. Use povidone iodine diluted antibacterial mouth wash and apply warm water saline to improve circulation.

Try to use a soft tooth brush to prevent further damage to the gums
For the time being avoid coffee/tea and hot/chilled beverages.

If the condition persists then the oral cavity and gums need to be examined for the presence of any hyperplastic changes.

The bad breath is most likely associated with oral cavity infections involving anaerobic bacteria. Metronidazole course would be required for treating such an infection.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
