Question: I have been taking penecillin for a case of tonsilitis for 6 days now. My glads were very swollen initially but seem to now go down and then flare back up with a dry irriated throat even though my tonsils have seemed to go down.

Not sure if im recovering at all?

Brief Answer:
Tonsilitis can also be viral

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

tonsilitis can be caused by bacteria or viruses. Viral tonsilitis is very common and antibiotics won't improve it. Bacterial tonsilitis can get better with antibiotics provided that the chosen drug is active against the pathogen. If you've had many attacks of tonsilitis in a short period of time and you've taken antibiotics, then bacterial resistance may have been induced.

Since your tonsils seem to be better, give it another 48 hours and if no improvement has occurred till then, a visit to your doctor would be recommended.

How's your temperature? Is it improving?

A longer than usual course of tonsilitis may denote viral etiologies like the Epstein-Barr virus (infectious mononucleosis) or other viruses.
