Suggest Treatment For Disturbed Sleep When Suffering From Congestive Heart Failure

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Oct 2014
Question: I am a 78-year-old female, newly diagnosed with CHF (atrial enlargement, 20% EF). I am on Lasix, Losartin, and metoprolol, which I take at breakfast. My sleep is interrupted almost every night, when I awake between 2-3 a.m., stay awake for 3-4 hours, and then go back to sleep until 7-8. I still work full time at desk work at home, and I am getting tired. I have been put on Trazodone (not the extended release form), but it isn't reliably helping. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
I recommend a sleep study & CPAP machine...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX

I'm so sorry for the situation you are in. You seems to be suffering from sleeps disorders which are one of the main complications of severe heart failure. If you were my patient I would recommend a sleep study before and then CPAP machine in order to help you with your sleep disturbance.

Moreover I encourage you to:
- Reduce weight
- Eat 3-4 hours before going to sleep
- Avoid daily rest and sleeping
- Reduce alcohol intake

Hope this was of help!
