Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea And Orange Colored Stool While On Cefaclor

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Oct 2015
Question: I just had a bowel movement, and there was a lot more than usual + it was soft + red/orange in color. I've never seen this before, but I am on an antibiotic called Cefaclor 500mg. Could the antibiotic have caused this + almost every morning for a while I've had an upset stomach once drinking my hot chocolate. I do every morning drink two 32 oz. glasses of water while taking Vyvanse 70mg. + I take Brintolex 5mg. one a day + 70mg. of Contrave twice a day. However, I've been on the Vyvanse for over two years, Brintolex for about two months, and Contrave for about two months. What do you think is the problem...I've never had this happen in the past? Thanks,
doctor

Brief Answer:
Antibiotic associated diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

Yes you are right.
Cefaclor and similar antibiotics can cause diarrhea.
These antibiotics disrupt the balance between the good and the bad bacteria in the gut causing diarrhea.
Milder forms resolve once you stop the antibiotics.
But if the diarrhea is severe and if it is associated with abdominal pain, fever or blood and mucus in stool, then stool analysis has to be done to rule out C diff infection and start treatment for it.
It looks like you have a milder form of antibiotic associated diarrhea.
Drink enough fluids.
Take probiotic supplements.
If there is no relief, consult your doctor regarding stopping the antibiotic and asking for an alternative medication.

I hope that answers your question.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.
