Suggest Treatment For Delayed Periods

Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: Hello there,

My girlfriend and I recently had unprotected sex, we are both 25 years old and it is her first time. I did not ejaculate and was only inside her for about 2-3 minutes. This happened on September 28th and she said she has her period normally on the 5th or 6th of each month. It is now October 9th and she still hasn't had her period yet. Does it usually come late when losing her virginity? She is very worried at this time, and we have scheduled to go see a doctor tomorrow afternoon. Is there anyway of knowing if she is pregnant? What should she do at this time? Is there anything we can do? What are the chances of her being pregnant? Please help. Thank You.

Brief Answer:
Get a pregnancy test done.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
I can understand your concern for pregnancy, but chances of pregnancy are less likely in your case, due to the following reasons:
1)     Precum contains little sperms which can cause pregnancy. Since there was no ejaculation inside chances of pregnancy are less.
2)     Pregnancy occurs only during the time of ovulation. Ovulation is the release of a single, mature egg from a follicle that developed in the ovary and occurs on day 14 of a menstrual cycle. 28th Sept was nearly 21-22nd day of her cycle.
Therefore the delay in her period is most likely due to hormone disturbance or stress and anxiety. She should wait for periods to resume.

These days urine pregnancy kits are readily available in the market and are accurate too. She can go for an home urine pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy.

I will be available to guide you further once she gets the test done.

Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Thank You for your reply Dr. XXXXXXX Tayal. Just to confirm, the next best option for my girlfriend is to get a pregnancy test done, correct? I can just buy one from a local department store of any brand pregnancy test and tell her to do the test tomorrow morning? Also, is it too soon to do a pregnancy test as she told me her period usually comes on the 5th and it will be the 10th tomorrow, so 5 days in total. Will the test be accurate?

We also have a doctor's appointment tomorrow afternoon, when we are there, are there any specifics we should be asking the doctor or anything else?

Thank You.

Brief Answer:
Yes. Do a test.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Yes. She is already 5 days overdue for her expected date. These tests are almost 97% accurate. It is the right time to do the test.
Nothing specific needs to be asked. This delay is likely to be stress related.
Hope my answer is helpful.
