Question: My husband has been having twinges under his left breast. It happens every so often. He's been checked by a cardiologist, but they found nothing. The pain is sharp and lasts for a second only. Now that the cardiologist has ruled out a heart issue, what should he look at next?

Brief Answer:
Costochondritis, probably

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

The pain you described is not pain derived from heart problems, although it is a positive thing that he has undergone a full check-up for the heart, since he is 66 years of age. This kind if pain, sharp, localized in a certain point, that comes and goes within seconds, points more to a acute or chronic inflammation of the locomotory system of the ribcage (bones, cartilages and/or muscles), which is harmless and may happen to anyone, due to rapid chanes of pressure within the chest or even due to deep breaths. In my opinion there is nothing to be worried about. However, he could use a short course of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs: ibuprofen, ketoprofen, indomethacin), for five days, if this is a worrisome phenomenon to him.

I hope I was helpful. I am happy to help, if you have follow-up questions.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
