Suggest Treatment For Constipation While On Mirtazapine

Question: This my father's profile, he has been taking mirtazapine from 12 years I checked on internet and saw several side effects including thickening of veins and constipation.
He is feeling lot of gas and constipation is this due to this medication. And suggest some suggestions for the same

I read your query and understand your concerns.

First of all I must agree that mirtazapine have side effects in form off constipation and sedation. However these side effects appear in few months of treatment and not after 12 years of treatment. The other common cause for constipation is advanced age and I think this should be considered before making final opinion.

I must also inform you that thickening of veins is not a well established side effects of mirtazapine and contributed by multiple factors.

Having said this in my opinion a simple change in life style is the only thing required for constipation and gas problem. This includes regular physical exercise, stress management, plenty of fluids and increased use of dietary fibres. If your doctor is willing to continue mirtazapine due to potential benefits I feel these simple change are the all which you need to advice to your father.
